Updated to V2.7.0 (again)

Postby RogueSpear » Sun Sep 21, 2008 9:08 pm

20080921 - Installer and .msi file have been updated to include the extra components needed for iTunes v8.x to run.

Fucking d-bags at Apple just have to try and make things difficult. Much more screwing around like this and my iPhone is going to take the place of a clay pigeon. Anyway, I don't really feel like maintaining two separate versions of QuickTime Alternative so my particular installer is going to contain this extra bloat.

Hey Rogue, do you by any chance know what the functional differences are between QuickTime Alternative and Shark007's so-called "QuickTime Lite"?

I really don't. I've always used QA and never saw a reason to change that. It's possible that other packages don't use files from the actual QT distro, making them "safer" from any sort of IP issues. One of the reasons I've continued to stick with QA lately is that I know for sure that it works with iTunes.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I saw it as well. I know Shark's is basically just a slimmed down version of Apple's original MSI. His contains original QuickTime files (obviously) and it works with iTunes (I think he might even maintain an iTunes addon for it). So I'm really not too sure what the actual differences are.

As a point of interest, QTA installer is 2MB smaller. Considering that amounts to 20% of QTL's installer, I'd say that's a somewhat striking difference. Maybe Shark knows.

edit-
I asked Shark about the differences. His response:
To the best of my knowledge there is no functional difference other than the other is published by K-Lite.

At least with MSI installers, it is obvious whats going on.

QT Lite contains exactly the same components as QuickTime Alternative. The ONLY difference between the two packs is that QT Lite does not contain Media Player Classic.

That's the wrong QuickTime Lite. I was talking about Shark007's QTL.

I tried updating your MSI to v3.0.0, but the Firefox plugin didn't work right. Also, the CPL shows up, but it's being a finicky bitch. I didn't use any setup capturing programs. I just did a simple dir /b /on /s comparison for your install source and an installation of QTA. The only new file that was introduced was QTCF.dll, so I added that to the MSI, updated the registry stuff to reflect the new version numbers, and called it a day, but that didn't seem to work. I tried adding AAS (Apple Application Support) to it, but that didn't help.

Any ideas on how to do this one? Do you still use Admin Studio to capture setups?

I updated this one last week. Just haven't had the time to upload. I'll try to get to it tonight - and I'll elaborate more too... wife's talking to me right now.

Oh sweet. That'd be awesome man.

Should I post the 2.0.1 update of Real Alternative? That one updated just fine. It's a fairly meaningless update, but I like to keep everything new and on the BLEEDING EDGE!
